A specialist may have extensive knowledge about and experience with treatments for your type of blood cancer. In some cases, your oncologist is a blood cancer specialist (hematologist), and you may be considering a consultation with another blood cancer specialist.
At the consultation, the specialist can review your medical records, offer their opinion on your treatment plan, and discuss options. This may help you feel more informed and confident in your current or future treatment plans.
Are consultations with other doctors common?
Consultations with other doctors, sometimes called a second opinion, are common. Many oncologists are supportive of it and may even suggest a consultation. Sometimes your insurance may require a consultation with another doctor before starting a treatment.
It is your right as a patient to consult with another doctor. You can do what feels right for you to feel comfortable and confident in your care.
Where can I find a specialist?
Your oncologist may already have a relationship with a specialist that they can refer you to. You can start by asking your doctor for a referral. Or, depending on your insurance, you may be able to refer yourself. You can also consider contacting:
- Advocacy groups for your type of cancer
- American Society of Hematology Directory
- National Cancer Institute (NCI): Designated Cancer Institutes
- Your insurance company
