Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS) is a common and serious side effect of CAR T-cell therapy. It is caused by the release of molecules called cytokines by certain cells in the body. Some cytokines cause the cells of your immune system to be more active. This can lead to symptoms felt by patients who receive CAR T.
After a CAR T infusion, your immune cells, including your CAR T cells, may release large amounts of cytokines which can lead to CRS. You may feel:
- feverish (feeling hot or chills)
- muscle aches, pain
- tired
- a loss of appetite
Not everyone who receives CAR T will experience CRS, but when it does happen it can become severe or even life threatening.
Your CAR T treatment team will monitor you closely for signs of CRS.
